Plot: LIFE AGAINST DEATH: SREBRENICA
This is Kadir’s story about his time in Srebrenica 1992-1995. All the horror of Srebrenica Kadir Habibovic watched and painful memories forced him to write a book “Life against Death: Srebrenica”. In early September 2012, I received an email from him. He asked if he could send me his yet unpublished book. By reading his book, I thought about the greatest depths of consciousness of the human race, which makes huge crimes and kills other people. Another important motif that was tied to Kadir’s book was his confession, the wayof telling this amazing story seems like a modern horror movie where Kadir is a real hero – because he just survived the massacre in Srebrenica.
Kadir Habibovic is a hero, he survived and he brought out the book, his duty to the public. Today we can ask ourselves: Are we able or have the strength as a community to deal with this kind of true story? I got the impression that modern Europe is afraid or ashamed of Kadir’s story. Kadir’s book is dedicated to the whole world. In human history there is always tragedy, evil, fear, hunger, exhaustion, agony which leads men to madness, people running and sinking in blackness, despair. The book faithfully shows Kadir’s internal state, pulling viewers under his skin, so that all readers have to travel Kadir’s path. Everyone will feel what it is seems to be on the execution line, postpone death day by day, hour by hour, holding a straw to keep alive. Kadir’s book convincingly paints the psychological state of people when they realize they are to be murdered.
Sahin has vision of the movie, an author driven movie which will be understandable to all generations and will show viewers how a man should be a man to stay human. Are we able to see and hear the suffering of others and hear the plight of the people? What does this systematic mass killing do to us? We learned in school about Auschwitz, the extermination of American Indians… etc. I thought these tragic events would never happen again. Kadir’s story moves aside all my ideals of a man, and I feel deeply that the story should focus the people’s mind on the systematic killing of other people, how it happened, what it means. The film about Kadir should not be cosmetic, art for art’s sake; each moving picture must give straight meaning and trust, but should not be too much of a strain for the viewer, to be suffocated by heavy true suffering images. But the viewers must face the all truth of Srebrenica’s collective psychological drama while the powerful who were leading world were sleeping and some just watched live extermination of men and older boys. This is a great shame of modern civilization that people get terrorized, tortured, over the years 1992, 1993, 1994 and finally, as battered and frightened, in July 1995 they are heartlessly
massacred.
In what direction is our planet going? These issues only motivate me to bring Kadir’s book to readers, motivate me to create a film based on the destiny of Kadir and his Srebrenician people, a movie that helps people to turn decisively against evil. In the end, this is a film about horror in Srebrenica, horror in Europe, horror in the world. Can we make a better world? Srebrenica is not only the pain of Bosnians; Srebrenica is a collective pain of all the nations on this small planet Earth. Kadir’s book has a universal message and helps people to easily recognize the dimension of evil and wicked policy.
We see a sign that people are temporary on this planet, all are just passing beings in this world. We have to know and feel Kadir’s inner world in his ring of death and how we react by reading his book. His book is a must-read book. The book is translated from the original Bosnian in to English, Dutch, Turkish, and a German translation is in progress. Any help tobring Kadir’s book to readers and help developing the film project, would be greatly appreciated. The Book and The Film confronting good and evil in our world, world of planet
Earth.
